Catherine Owen

Catherine Owen is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Politics at the University of Exeter. Prior to her award, she was Lecturer in Central Asian Studies in the Department of History and Civilization, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi’an, China. She has also worked on the UK Research Council-funded project, ‘Rising Powers and Conflict Management in Central Asia’, led by Prof John Heathershaw, which resulted in the joint publication of two peer-reviewed articles and one edited volume. In 2017, Owen spent three months as a Visiting Fellow in Fudan Development Institute, specifically created to explore Belt and Road issues. She also collaborates with the Shanghai Institute of International Studies on China-Central Asia relations, publishing two peer-reviewed articles in their in-house journal, the China Quarterly of International Strategic Studies, and is involved with setting up an exchange programme between Exeter University and Tsinghua University Beijing for PhD students working on Central Asian Studies. In September 2020, Owen will take up a permanent lectureship in International Relations at the University of Exeter.
